Skeleton Krew: no.0029 Eerie Eddie

The Skeleton Krew Collection is back with a new portrait, just in time for the ghoulish season or any time of the year! Meet Eerie Eddie, a ghoulish specimen of the Halloween season! Young at heart, he skips the streets in hope of filling up his pillow sack with all the treats a little ghoul could eat, but don't let the innocence fool you; he was once caught playing with a dead mouse.

I am really loving the final outcome, I find it to be so interesting to see the process of the paintings, the first round he def looked more innocent and with blonde hair too. I finished him last night and I must say the final touches have made him a bit more daring and dark. This childhood spirit is ready to dance and bring mischief perhaps. His costume features hand-painted bat wings, a mask with white face paint, baby fangs and puffed bow with a tiny skull embellishment.

This portrait mixes the nostalgic look of the Victorian era with vintage flare of the Halloween season. Ready to spook a friend and perfect for any gothic party or personal painting collection, sit him leaning against some books or place him behind glass ready to greet. Skeleton Krew no.0029 Eeerie Eddie is now available at Red Heart 13.

1st ROUND: I find it funny how much more evil looking it has made him with black hair.

Trick & Treats: Halloween Ideas

Halloween is my all time most cherished season of the year, I'm feeling a little bummed this year because I can't decorate my house due to packing and mayhem. Every year we usually throw a Halloween costume but this year we are heading over to our friends house for an awesome time, I actually lending some of my paintings for the haunting decor. Bruce and I are being a little creative again this year, but not saying who were are going to be, but check out these sweet vintage cat eye glasses that I got for my costume!

Even though there is no sign of halloween at my house, I still love looking at all the lovely decorating ideas from Martha Stewart and who cannot forget fabulous treats that would make snacks for any party. There is always next year I guess!

I just covet all of her hand spun cotton figurines for every season. I really love her Halloween collection, including this Orange and Black Bat Girl Figure.

Recently I've been on the look out for curious accents to sweeten it! Check out these unique finds ready to add character to any room:

Nigel the Wolfman

An odd case of curiosity, Nigel the Wolfman was quite an intriguing young lad, born in 1881 he suffered from Hypertrichosis also known as the werewolf syndrome; a very rare disorder in which his hair was extremely dense and grew from every inch of his six foot body.

As a child, his single mum neglected him and at the age of 9 he ran away from home and joined the local circus, where Miss Manely, the bearded lady adopted him. He grew up as a sideshow performer in the late 19th century, and was later brought to the United States by P.T. Barnum in 1886.

Playing a beast of the sorts, Nigel would bark and growl to entertain the audience, however no one ever knew the quiet side of him. He loved to read novels during the long hours on the road and spoke several languages. Over the years he acquired quite an antiquarian book collection. In 1921 he died alone amongst his favorite novels including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Moonstone.

You can see Nigel in my upcoming show at the Toothless Cat art gallery in Philadelphia come January.

Stephen Gammell Illustration

Terrified in my younger years, I would crawl up in bed, under a tent made of blankets and would try to go to bed reading the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series, like I said try is best word. Reading by the glowing light from my small lamp, I would always be afraid to reach over and turn out the light, terrified of a slimy skeleton hand reaching from under my bed and dragging me into the nether realm. The frightening folklore ghost stories by Alvin Schwartz never failed, and none without the companion hand drawings of Stephen Gammel.

The real truth of the matter is that I've been haunted ever since but in a good way, I cannot forget the awful tragic revenge and the dripping flesh decay inspiring my madness for the macabre. As I look back now, no wonder children were so afraid, the monsters always kept me intrigued even though I would be afraid to turn the page. Stephen Gammel is my all time favorite illustrator, I am in awe of his skills and the fine details of his pencil drawings; I admire cracks in the skull, stringy hair, mist with lurking shadows and who cannot forget the goo, there is always strands of it everywhere. His work is of gory organic forms nestled with foggy dark backgrounds, never knowing what will be at the next turn. I was always chilled to the bone with screaming faces and odd lumpy creatures, the splendid drawings perfect the mood of every scary story, many of which I take inspiration. Some of my favorites are The Haunted House, High Beams, The Big Toe, and Room for One More. Last year I created a painting called The Bride for my Skeleton Krew Collection, inspired by the story about a bride who falls into the childhood fun of hide and seek, never being found until months later after getting locked inside of an old wooden chest. The painting features cob webs, a wedding ring and Victorian two faced bride starring out at the viewer; this painting will be featured in my upcoming show in January.

At a ripe age of 27, I still bust out the old tattered books looking for a few scares and a rattle of my bones. Check out some other children's books that feature the art of Stephen Gammel, not all are so scary:
