The Seven Sutherland Sisters - World's Longest Hair

Sometime last year I discovered the long hair beauties of the Sutherland Sisters of Lockport, New York. They were world famous due to their fabulous hair, all together a length of 37 feet. The Sutherland children were a musical family and often performed around New York State as the "Sutherland Concert of Seven Sisters and One Brother. In 1882 they traveled with W.W. Coles Colossal Shows and later in 1884 joined Barnum and Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth. I am truly amazed by the patience the sisters must of had, their hair is like a cloak of life. I only dream of having hair that long, I'm in the process of growing it long again, I want it to drape my body like a fare mermaid of the sea. One day perhaps, though I'm sure I will cut it before hand.

Dora "Kitty" Sutherland (1858-?)

BURIED TREASURE: Classic Beauty Ideas

What do you do when you have piles of jewelry / vintage supplies?
Well this past weekend I ventured back to my local hot spot for all that is vintage. You can read about my experience from my previous blog Buried Treasure at the Local Flea Market.

Saturday, I came home with bag filled with all kinds of vintage finds to make new jewelry, I ended up sorting through it all and decided to take some pics and sort it out to show you how to combine various vintage pieces together. Here is the first set I call Classic Beauty; I sorted and included vintage pearls, silver wrist watches, glass rose pendants and some loose beads. This particular assortment just reminds me so much of my grandmother Sarah Elizabeth, in her earlier peacock years, she wore lace pill hats, lovely white gloves and simple pearl strands.

~ Combine different styles of pearls, try using various sizes and colors. I am very fond of the creams with pinks.

~ Combine thin metal chains swooped with a whole strand of pearls then add a simple pendant at the end to top it off.

~ Mix vintage flea market finds with your finds on etsy, like these brass pink frosted glass dangles from Gypsy Spirit Studio. These pink dangles would look perfect with the large pink pearls I picked up this weekend, they would make charming earrings.

In Love With Dorian Gray

Often times I get inspired by novels, paintings, poetic fairy tales and classic films. One of my favorite characters in literature and film is Dorian Gray. The Picture of Dorian Gray written by Oscar Wilde, is one of the last works considered gothic horror fiction and has a Faustian and an underlying homoerotic theme.

Dorian Gray is a young handsome man, who becomes the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is dazzled by Dorian's physical beauty and becomes obsessed with him; he believes that Dorian's beauty is the reasoning for his approach in his work, therefore creates a magnificent portrait of him.  The painting was so perfect that it makes Dorian wish he was immortal and inevitably stop the aging process. His wish was fulfilled, soon after the painting becomes more grotesque day after day instead of Dorian himself. The portrait serves as a memento of Dorian's fate and his narcissistic ways, and with each sin he lives the painting displays a form of disfigurement.

This character truly fascinates me, these black and gray earrings were inspired from The Picture of Dorian Gray. Being infatuated with Dorian (amongst many), these earrings hold the physical beauty that Dorian always searched for. Last year I had created these designs, unfortunately I ran out of these lovely beads…but finally I have more in stock.

Keep your eye out next week for these earrings or similar pieces.
Please email me if you would like to reserve a pair!

LEFT: The In Love With Dorian Gray design has engraved crystals infused with a jet black floral pattern that are matched with black rhinestone spacers and a clear gray glass bead on a gun metal chain.

RIGHT: The Victorian Gray pair are based on a modern girl living in a Victorian past; they have a twist of present simplicity and detailed flourishes of mourning colors. They are made from large lucite drops that are matched with a gray matte bead and a vintage crystal.
