Gothic: Dark Glamour

The current exhibition Gothic: Dark Glamour at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, is a dedication to the strange history of the macabre and dark gloom of the gothic style. Over the years, the term gothic has been known to have negative connotations and symbol for the dark, mourning and the mischievous. The imagery of this new exhibit touches on the imagery of death and decay, and the erotic macabre that has often attracted many designers.

There are several collections of the exhibit that take you through different genres of dark glamour. The first is Night, it explores the symbolism of black. It has long been associated with death, evil, mystery and the Prince of Darkness.

The second is the Cabinet of Curiosities, which refers to wonder rooms or memory theaters of the Renaissance, a little world filled with collections such as natural history, religious reliquaries and art objects. One of my favorites is the human skull, it was often treasured as a memento mori, as a reminder that you must die.

Photobucket
This pig skin tattooed top hat, created by Justin Smith can be seen, as well as this Bat Belt Buckle made of gunmetal with paste lent from the Collection of Mark Walsh Leslie Chin.

Photobucket

The Strange Beauty collection is characterized by bizzare shapes and odd sources of imagery, such as this Rodarte evening dress inspired by Japanese horror movies. The designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte experimented with red dye and fabrics to resemble blood in water.

Photobucket

Other parts include the Bat Cave, Mourning inspired fashions, the Haunted Palace inspired by the architectural metaphor of the disturbed mind that recalls Edgar Allen Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher." You can also see medieval inspired fashions in the Ruined Castle collection and corsetry, veiling and masking fashions surrounded by a graveyard fence in the Cemetery collection.

Gothic: Dark Glamour is on view through February 21, 2009. Additional programming includes the Goth Talk panel, a Gothic: Dark Glamor talk and booksigning as well as screenings of Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd and Corpse Bride.

A Joyous Flight

Yesterday, was a happy day for miss Alison Welch, the creator of Spool Design. She celebrated her 1 year anniversary of her etsy shop, hoot hoot! Spool is a lovely world filled with light hearted shabby chic jewelry; everything from darling earrings, elegant necklaces and her famous bird egg beads that she hand makes from polymer clay.

Alison is full time graphic designer and my side kick here at work. She enjoys adding personal touches in her creations, like in her new collage watch necklaces; like the one featured below. She is also an advocate of attending antique stores, flea markets and loves anything vintage. Back in the day, when she was just knee-high to a tadpole, she would never let anyone in her family throw anything away, because "I could make something with that," and she usually did. Today her junk collecting and obsession to make stuff has landed her right on etsy. She is a proud member of the Delaware Street Team and CSST - Etsy's Cottage Style Street Team; the most wonderful collaboration of Shabby Chic-style Etsiers.

Let's show some love and a big congratulations to
Spool Design. Keep up the lovely work Alison!

Looking for a place to showcase your hard work, well I introduce to you Paper N Stitch. An online exhibition that was created to promote talented artists, designers, makers of the handmade and independent boutiques. This month Red Heart 13 has an online exhibition on the site from November 15th to December 14th.

It is really simple! You sign up to the site and wait for your shop to be approved by Brittni who curates the exhibitions, if you selected it costs $45 for the month, but it is so worth it! You build your page featuring an avatar, profile and twenty items each with three images and a description.

During the month each individual is featured in a blog telling a little more about your work and also you may be in a collaboration of readings. Today we were featured on the Paper N Stitch blog on their jewelry gift guide. Our "A Fallen Acorn" necklace was featured and was mentioned as a great accessory if you want to make a statement. I hope you all check out this great website, so far I have seen more items hearts on the particular items that are featured. I look forward to making my goal this month. "Spread the love!"

The Princess and the Pea

Photobucket
Photo by Eugenio Recuenco, from a series inspired by fables and fairy tales.

"The prince saw at once that she must be a real princess when she had felt the pea through twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds. Nobody but a real princess could have such a delicate skin. So the prince took her to be his wife, for now he was sure that he had found a real princess, and the pea was put into the Museum."

I have always had a fascination with enchanting castles, fairy filled forests and the unforgettable charming prince from all the childhood stories I remember. This enrapturing tale of The Princess and the Pea has spawn a new necklace design, inspired by the fabrics of her 2o mattresses, her long luscious hair and the tiny olive pea which discolored the princess' skin.

Photobucket
The Princess and the Pea necklace is made with twelve vintage pink and rose colored pearls and a vintage brass stamping matched with a olive pearl with two bead caps.

We Salute You

Photobucket
Photo from the Charlestown Historical Society, veterans of the WWII. www.charlestownhistoricalsociety.org/veterans.html

Today is Veteran's Day! I wanted to give my thanks to all the troops and people who have served our country. Please take a moment of your day to remember the men and women who have have fought and are still fighting for our country.

I'm sure everyone knows someone who has served;  my younger brother Mark is an Army veteran at the age of 26, he served two years in Iraq when he was only 22. I am honored and so thankful that he made it home ok. I know many people who have families over seas and it is hard everyday for them. Let's all give them thanks today, and all of our veterans for defending our liberty and our country. My thoughts are with you and I say THANK YOU!

The Dark Duchess

 Photobucket
Photobucket
The past two months have been wonderful for me, I had my first art show back in September, it went off very well and everyone was so supportive. I ended up selling two necklaces,  a shadow box called Armored Saint and two tiny brass box relics. I came back even stronger for my second art show in October. Over 130 people came out to see my work along with two other brilliant artists. Having more assemblages and relics I was very successful and featured new work, I sold the Two Hearts, Two Souls collage, Vampire in the Dark painting and had a commission for a for a custom Skeleton Krew portrait like the one featured below. I can't wait to have another art show, while in Salem last week I picked up some new portraits to add to my Skeleton Krew collection. I look forward to creating new works and have been feeling inspired lately, all I need now, is time.

Royal Highness

Photobucket Photobucket

I have found a new LOVE, or should I say a goddess has found me. Over the past few months I have been surprised several times by the lovely Courtney Love Cobain. She stopped by my shop, Red Heart 13 in October and picked up the a Royal Crest necklace that was featured in my art show earlier in the month. I thought this was a once in a life time event, a true queen, but she visited again on my birthday Oct 30th, was a present to me! She purchased my Royal Cranberry Necklace and a pair of Royal Crest Earrings. For the third time, she came last Friday and purchased the Cinderella's Carriage necklace and a rare relic from my collection, the Lullaby Memento Mori Relic of the baby Marie Antoinette, which was named after me and included a braided strand of my hair under the glass.

I am overwhelmed by happiness and have read that she is obsessed with etsy, picking up lovely fabrics, jewelry and unique finds for her and friends for holiday gifts. I have noticed she is really into Steampunk, Victorian Era and lastly Marie Antoinette. I am so honored for her to come to my shop and support me and other Etsians out there.

31 Days of Zemo's Horror Fest

Halloween has officialy come to an end and so has the 31 Days of Zemo's Horror Fest. Lots of classic and originals, two of my favorites were The Phantom of the Opera and the remake of the Omen. Halloween went off well this year for the Marvel's. We had a Halloween costume party, and tomorrow Bruce and I are heading up to Salem, MA for our anniversary trip. I hope to find some creepy places including the Salem Inn, where we are staying, I hear it is haunted. I will come equipped with my camera and camcorder just in case. Here are a couple pics from our spooky fun Halloween night.

Photobucket
Me as a witch, original costume idea was Elvira, but my wig couldn't compete with Elvira's 80s hair.

Photobucket
Bruce was the Red Death from the original Phantom of the Opera. Costume was handmade, except the mask and hat.
